April 2025 – MorDance, the mission-driven ballet company known for its powerful and socially
conscious work, announces the world premiere of Trees, an evening-length ballet inspired by the
groundbreaking research of forest ecologist Dr. Suzanne Simard. MorDance brings to life Simard’s incredible findings, revealing trees to be members of cooperative, dynamic communities.
Created by MorDance Founder and Artistic Director Morgan McEwen, with an original score by
acclaimed composer Polina Nazaykinskaya, Trees illuminates the vast communication systems of mycorrhizal networks hidden beneath the forest floor. Blending contemporary ballet with evocative music and visual storytelling, the work explores environmental stewardship through themes of resilience, resource sharing, and the interconnectedness of all living things. The production will be performed live by a 10-piece string ensemble, further enriching the immersive experience and emotional power of the ballet.
“Trees asks us to consider what it means to be in community,” said McEwen. “At a time when
division and environmental destruction feel overwhelming, this work offers a vision of care,
connection, and mutual support both in nature and in ourselves.”
The ballet will debut in Yonkers from May 15 to 17 at the MorDance Studio Theater, followed
performances at New York Live Arts in New York City on May 30 and 31. Receptions will be held
after both Saturday performances.
