On Saturday, May 17th, the Hudson River Museum hosted several special events as part of the Yonkers Arts Weekend, including a “Bubble Extravaganza” with giant bubbles, flowing streamers, and kites in the courtyard and live music from the Westchester Center for Jazz Ensemble in the lower gallery.
One such event was the “Fashion in Motion” fashion show, which featured designs by Westchester Community College Fashion Design Department students, ranging from first-semester designs to the final collections of graduating students.

The Fashion Design & Technology program at WCC educates students on how apparel is produced for various markets, considering creative, technical, and cost factors. Graduates of the program are prepared for work as junior patternmakers, design assistants, technical designers, and more.

The show also featured senior students’ final collections, many of which highlighted certain aspects unique to each designer. Many of the designers incorporated elements from their own cultural backgrounds and personal interests, with nods to theatrical design, urban living, pop culture, and even the most recent Met Gala.

In addition to models walking the runway, showcasing the students’ designs, accolades were given to the graduating class, many of whom are moving on to study at FIT, with which the design program has a partnership.

In attendance was Dr. Belinda Miles, the President of Westchester Community College. “I’m feeling whimsical,” Miles remarked. “This is truly fashion-forward and fashion future.” Miles also acknowledged her appreciation of the program’s partnership with FIT, as well as her appreciation of the City of Yonkers.
“We’re happy that we’ve been able to take the second floor of the old Sears building and make something happen,” she said in regards to WCC’s Yonkers campus.
