In 2023, Troop 1787 began as a group of 14 enthusiastic Kindergarten girls embarking on their journey as Daisies. During their first year, they completed the Daisy flower displayed on the front of their vests, with each petal representing a unique skill or adventure, such as learning to be honest and fair or considerate and caring. As the girls earned each petal, they discovered more about themselves and the importance of community service. The troop proudly marched in various parades, earning the title of “Best Scout Marching Unit” at the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2024. They also attended a day at Manhattan College to promote Women in Engineering, exploring the wonders of science and the impactful advancements being made by women in the field. During the holiday season, the troop created wreaths for the elderly and participated in a toy drive to spread cheer.
After their inaugural year, troop leaders Clara Barragán and Christine Serini decided to expand Troop 1787 into a multilevel troop. The troop welcomed two new leaders, Esmeralda DiBari and Dr. Yolisept Bencosme, DPM, along with nine more members spanning Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes. Since this expansion, the girls have engaged in numerous inspiring activities, such as honoring veterans by handing out flower bouquets at City Hall on Veterans Day, hosting a water table at the annual Yonkers Marathon, World Thinking Day tree promise table at Jefferson Mall, Trunk or treat sponsor for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Manhattanville University, serving hot chocolate at Untermyer Gardens Conservancy during the Illumination Show and assisting Santa and Mayor Mike Spano with the coat and toy drive for Yonkers Kids at City Hall. Cadettes have contributed by creating cards, scarves, and care packages for veterans as part of the Operation Cookie Drop Team, and they are now working on their Silver Award project, “Little Readers,” a literacy initiative in collaboration with Yonkers Parks and Recreation. The Silver Award is the second-highest honor in the Girl Scout program. Meanwhile, Daisies have completed their three journeys, earning the Summit Award.
Good Morning America Appearance
On March 12th, Troop 1787 proudly represented Girl Scouts Heart of the Hudson on Good Morning America for National Girl Scouts Day. The troop is made up of an incredible and diverse group of young girls, including members with disabilities. Throughout their time in the troop, these girls have thrived while having fun, building confidence, and forging lasting friendships. Recently, they celebrated victories in the Powderpuff Derby, securing both first and second places.
Currently, the troop is working on a shoe drive with Saint Mary Of the Snow Society and bringing the Wreaths Across America project to Yonkers. Of course, they are also busy with cookie booths around town, sharpening their entrepreneurial skills.
Troop 1787 remains dedicated to community-based activities that instill the true meaning of giving back. These young girls have already learned many valuable lessons, and they continue to grow as they achieve new heights together.
