We’re Back!
We are excited to report that The Yonkers Ledger is back, and we are ready to continue to be your go-to source for Yonkers local news.
Not too long ago, like cities around New York, Yonkers was lucky to have excellent local news coverage from many sources:Â The Journal News had dedicated Yonkers City Hall reporters, community reporters, columnists, and a robust editorial board that regularly weighed in on Yonkers City government and politics. Similarly, News 12, with its studios on Executive Boulevard, provided daily, comprehensive TV coverage and their reporters were city celebrities. The radio station WVOX also carried lively commentary about Yonkers. But now, these traditional news outlets are closed or are shells of their former selves and have all but abandoned Yonkers coverage. Sadly, Yonkersites now have almost no access to reliable, independent information or analysis about what is happening in our city.
Two years ago, The Yonkers Ledger stepped in to fill the void. It built a reputation for fairness and accuracy covering City Hall and local politics, and provided community-based residents the opportunity to post articles about important matters in their neighborhoods.
One of our founding members of The Yonkers Ledger, Mark Parolisi, is leaving the newspaper. We wish him all the best in his new endeavors. The rebooted Ledger will build on our prior success. We will run stories about local government, about legislation in Albany and Washington that affects you, about neighborhoods around the city, about events and news that matters. We will also publish editorials like this one from our Editorial Board, made up of locals from different backgrounds and perspectives. Â
January Focus is the Environment
This month, we will focus on environmental issues. Flooding, heat islands, lead in drinking water: these are ongoing challenges that face us every year. Watch for posts about the environment in your neighborhood and across the city.
Call for Engagement
Like every newspaper, we need you, the readers. While our city needs independent local news that documents what is happening in our neighborhoods, schools, and city hall, your comments and discussion is essential. The Yonkers Ledger will work hard to stay the trusted place for local news, information and analysis of the things that matter to all of us in Yonkers. Follow us on social media and sign up for our newsletter.
Looking for another way to engage? You can be a citizen reporter! You must care about Yonkers and like seeing your name in print. Writing must be fact-based, fair, and accurate in events, quotes and pictures. Reach out to support@theyonkersledger.com if you have a particular interest. We want to hear from you!
