Poor Road Quality Causes Damage to New York Motorists in the Billions

The Road Information Program (TRIP), a national transportation research nonprofit, held a press conference on January 9th discussing their latest report: New York Transportation by Numbers: Providing a Modern, Sustainable Transportation System in the Empire State.

The report reflects upsetting news for New York’s motorists: traffic congestion, rough roads, and the lack of roadway safety features cost drivers $40.3 billion per year. In the New York metropolitan Area, the costs of lost time, vehicle damage, and car crashes caused by deteriorated roads average at $3800 per vehicle annually. Nearly a third of the area’s pavements are in poor condition, leading to increased fuel use and tire wear. Highway superintendents and local municipalities are seeking a $250 billion transportation funding increase.
