NEW WINDSOR, NY – The Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and their ministry partners are condemning the newly passed federal budget bill, claiming that it will deeply harm the most vulnerable in society and demonstrates a troubling disregard for human dignity.

Who Are the Presentation Sisters?

The Sisters, headquartered at 84 Presentation Way in New Windsor, have been a constant presence in communities throughout the Northeast for 150 years. The order was founded in Ireland in 1775 by Nano Nagle, known as the “Lady With the Lantern” for bringing light and care to the sick and poor at night. Since then, the Sisters have remained faithful to their mission, dedicating themselves to those who are frequently overlooked or in need.

“We, believe in the God-given human dignity of all people,” the Sisters said in their statement. “Our Gospel values compel us to act in ways that serve the common good and honor the human rights of all in society, especially the most vulnerable.”

Their Concerns About the Budget

The Sisters describe the budget bill as “a moral failure for American society,” specifically worried about:

Healthcare: Significant cuts to Medicaid programs

Food assistance: Reductions to programs that help families afford groceries

Immigration policies: Provisions that they claim will harm families and children.

Environmental protection: Reduced funding for public health programs

The order warns that the new budget will cause significant hardship for many Americans, including loss of healthcare coverage, increased food insecurity, family separations caused by immigration policies, and deteriorating environmental conditions, particularly in low-income communities.

Their Call to Action

“This bill treats our brothers and sisters inhumanely and disregards the human dignity of all people,” the Sisters concluded. They are asking people to join them “in prayer, word and deed” during this critical time.

The Sisters promise to continue helping those in need and fighting for laws that show “compassion, dignity and hope.”
